Why does Kings Mill Walk Park need to change?

The Harbourside neighbourhood is in the process of changing. A four-phased mixed-use development has been approved for this area. With the addition of new residents, families, seniors, dog owners, we need to look ahead and create a neighbourhood park that reflects the current and future needs of the community. We are also raising the level of the park to meet flood construction levels in response to climate change.

    What's happening to the parking?

In the future, underground parking will be available in the new neighbouring development lots as the Harbourside community expands. Street Parking will still be available at Harbourside Place, along Harbourside Drive, and a temporary parking lot will also be available for approximately 10 years.

Why can't we have access to the shore and water?

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority manages the water directly in front of the park. This area is part of a working harbour and sensitive marine habitat. It is not intended for public access (Vancouver Fraser Port Authority Land Use Plan 2020). The shoreline and current access to the water are changing for flood protection purposes and to enhance marine habitat for fish and other wildlife.

Why should we improve habitat here?

The majority of the inner Vancouver harbour shoreline has been developed for port, industrial, or commercial uses (including the original land infill at what is now Kings Mill Walk Park), and as a result marine biodiversity has been significantly deteriorating.

Because Kings Mill Walk Park is located between the outflows of two of the region's few remaining salmon bearing streams, it represents a rare opportunity to foster marine biodiversity along a portion of the shoreline, while also supporting healthy and resilient eco-systems in Mackay and Mosquito Creek.
