Project Update

Thank you for your feedback so far on the Off-Leash Area at Waterfront Park.

In late 2019, we opened a temporary off-leash area to the public and launched a survey to gather feedback. The main concerns we heard were about the size of the area, the slope toward the CN Rail and the slippery conditions on the site.

Based on your feedback we made some improvements in late 2020:

  • Expanded site which includes a flatter area
  • Regraded slope and installed drainage
  • Installed a pathway to help people move down the slope
  • Added new surfacing, including engineered wood chips on the flat terrain and Douglas Fir bark mulch on the slope

We've installed an off-leash dog area in the north section of Waterfront Park.

There is a growing need for off-leash dog areas in Lower Lonsdale and this space helps meet this demand by providing a safe, social place for dogs to play leash-free.

This pilot project will determine if this space, on the north side of Waterfront Park, is a good long-term location for an off-leash dog area.

Is it one large space or small and large dog areas

Geordie asked almost 2 years ago

    Good afternoon,

Thank you for question about the dog off-leash area at Waterfront Park North! There are two separate and contained dog zones. The larger of the two is the 'All Dog Zone' where dogs of any size are invited to play. The second area is called the 'Small Dog Zone'. As this implies, we invite small dogs to play in this area. We look forward to seeing you there with your furry friends.

Are there any plans to have a drinking fountain installed for the doggos?

nixthecreative asked over 1 year ago

The Waterfront Park master plan is about to get underway. The expectation is that the monitoring and public input process for the off-leash area will help inform the master plan process, providing opportunities to consider items such as dog drinking fountains

    Thank you for your question!
