Update February 5, 2024: Thank you to everyone who took the time to share your feedback with us on the community’s urban forest. The first phase of community engagement has ended, and we’re reviewing all the input received from interested parties and the community. Your input is important and will help us develop the draft Urban Forest Plan. We look forward to sharing a summary of community feedback in the coming months. Project updates will continue to be shared on this page.

Help us protect, manage, and grow the community’s urban forest

We’re developing an Urban Forest Plan to better protect, manage and grow the urban forest to deliver long-term benefits to our community.

The urban forest is an interconnected ecosystem that includes all the trees and supporting vegetation in the community, and it is located on public and private property such as parks, front and back yards, streets, and in commercial and industrial areas.

The plan will provide a roadmap to protecting and enhancing our community’s tree canopy. What's more, it will provide baseline information about trees in the City and describe the vision, goals and actions needed to protect and grow the urban forest over the next 30 years.

How to Get Involved

You’re invited to help shape the Urban Forest Plan in two rounds of public engagement. In the first round, we want to learn more about what aspects of the urban forest are important to the community and what could be improved.

Between January 15 – February 4, you can:

  • Complete the survey by Sunday, February 4, 2024 at 11:59 p.m.
    • Prefer a printed copy? Download, print and email the completed survey to urbanforest@cnv.org or pick up at copy at City Hall and deposit it in our dropboxes outside (141 West 14th Street, North Vancouver BC V7M 1H9).
  • Drop a pin on the map and show us your favourite areas of the urban forest, as well as what can be improved.
  • Visit a pop-up event in the community to connect with staff and provide input:
    • NV City Library | Friday, Jan. 19 | 3p.m. – 5 p.m. (rescheduled from Jan. 17)
    • CANCELLED: Sunrise Park (City Park Stewards Event) | Saturday, Jan. 20 | 9 a.m. – noon
    • NV City Library | Sunday, Jan. 21 | 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.
    • Shipyards Skate Plaza | Saturday, Jan. 27 | 2 p.m. – 5 p.m.
    • Shipyards Skate Plaza | Sunday, Jan. 28 | 2 p.m. – 5 p.m.

How Your Input Will be Used

Your input in this round of engagement will help us develop the vision, goals and actions needed to protect and grow the urban forest over the next 30 years. Input will be considered alongside research and best practices to help inform the development of the Urban Forest Plan.

This is the first of two phases of engagement, and is at the “consult” level of engagement on the IAP2 Spectrum of Engagement. (Learn more about the IAP2 Spectrum of Engagement).

Put pins on the map showing where you value the urban forest and places where you would like to see it improved. Whether it is your favourite tree, park, picnic spot, hiking trail — we want to hear about it and what you like about the urban forest in that area. Is there an area of the city you think needs improvement? We want to hear about that too.

Select the + sign and drag a pin onto the highlighted area to provide your comments and photos. Please do not include any photos of people.
