WHAT WE HEARD

Over the past few months, the City reached out to businesses and stakeholders in preparation for upgrading the cycling infrastructure of West 1st and 2nd Street through the 1st Street Mobility Corridor Project. The common theme we heard included:

• Maintain the centre left-turn lane as it is critical for businesses along the corridor. We also heard that street parking is important for employees and customers, but there are often vehicles occupying space for long periods of time.
• A focus on improving intersection safety and operation.
• Sight-lines from driveways, laneways and intersections were flagged as challenging with many large parked vehicles obstructing the view of oncoming traffic.

To address these themes, the project team has made the following updates to the preliminary design:

• Protected cycling facility on 1^st Street between MacKay St and W 3^rdStreet.
• Painted bike lanes at intersections and driveways to help raise the visibility of cyclists in areas of potential conflict.
• Adjustments to traffic signal timing and adding new left-turn lanes at MacKay Road, Fell and Bewicke Avenue to improve intersection safety and reduce traffic congestion.
• Improved sight-lines at driveways, laneways and intersections by restricting parking further from these access points.
• Maintaining the centre left-turn lane along the corridor to provide safe access and egress to businesses.
• Maintaining on-street parking within a 10-minute walking radius of the corridor.

NEXT STEPS

Once design and construction tendering are complete, construction is expected to take place this Fall.
