Update - June 9, 2021: Thank you for your interest in the West Grand Boulevard Improvements project. Our Spring 2021 public engagement period has closed and we’re reviewing all the input we received from the community. We’ll be sharing a summary of what we heard in Summer 2021. In Fall 2021, we'll present future recommendations for any changes to Grand Boulevard West to Council and the community.

Last year, we made changes to West Grand Boulevard between East Keith Road and East 19th Street to create a safer experience for everyone traveling along this stretch. We made these changes to allow space for physical distancing in response to COVID-19. This was part of our Open Streets Action Plan, to encourage safe walking and cycling across the City.

These changes included:

  • Dedicating the former northbound vehicle lanes to bicycles, shifting cyclists off the Green Necklace pathway and onto the closed lane.
  • Converting the former bike path to a pedestrian path.

Since then, the northbound bike path within the park adjacent to West Grand Boulevard alone saw over 90,000 pedestrians trips in 2020 – in total, the park saw a 50% increase in trips from 2019. As our community continues to adapt to new public health orders, our priority is to be flexible to those needs and provide safe travel for everyone on West Grand Boulevard.

After the initial round of changes, we’ve made more improvements by:

  • Replacing the sawhorse barriers with temporary delineator posts to improve the passage for cyclists, while continuing to restrict vehicles.
  • Installing new speed humps in the southbound travel lane on the 1200, 1700, and 1800 blocks to help lower vehicle speeds and improve safety for everyone.
